Healthy Hair Habits

People with great looking hair usually practice healthy hair habits. Let’s explore some things you can do to get the best hair possible.

Who doesn’t want healthy, shiny, gorgeous-looking hair? I know I do. It’s time to take a look at our hair habits and make some quick changes to turn our hair don’ts into hair do’s!

Are there certain things that people with beautiful hair know that we don’t? Perhaps. One thing for sure is that they all practice healthy hair habits and do whatever is necessary to make every hair day a good hair day. Keep in mind that hair doesn’t simply turn healthy overnight. It’s a commitment and it can take time to get your hair looking and feeling its best. One thing we know for sure is that it’s worth the time and effort. Let’s take a look at some of the best, healthy hair care habits from those in the know:

Avoid Anything Harsh

People with healthy hair tend to be very conscious of what they are putting on their locks. They rarely use products containing harsh ingredients, or mostly fragrance and little else. They look for shampoos, conditioners and styling aids that contain natural ingredients and that are clinically tested to deliver results. Moisturizing and softening ingredients like Aloe vera, olive and macadamia nut oils, and a strengthening ingredient like hydrolyzed wheat protein enzymes are a great choice. There are many natural ingredients that can help to soften hair and provide a lustrous shine.

Top Tip: Look for sulfate-free products. Sulfates tend to be a bit harsh on both the skin and the hair and can actually damage your hair. They can leave it frizzy, dehydrated looking and they can compromise your hair color. When you choose sulfate-free, you are taking a much gentler approach to your hair care regimen.

Shampooing Daily May Not Ne Necessary

You would be surprised to learn just how many people don’t really know how to shampoo. There is an art to it if you want to achieve the best results. The days of lather, rinse, repeat just doesn’t hold up anymore. Here’s the trick: if you have really thick and curly hair, you won’t need to shampoo as often as someone who has fine hair. You can wait a few days between shampooing. And those with fine hair or those who are more prone to oily hair conditions may need to wash every day, or every other day, to get rid of that greasy look. So, determine your hair type and shampoo as needed. Over-shampooing your hair can result in more bad hair days than good. When you do shampoo, remember it’s really important to rinse you hair thoroughly. Any residue left behind can lead to an unwelcome hair do.

Top Tip: To benefit your hair between shampooing days, try using a dry shampoo. Spritz at your roots and comb through. This will help to absorb excess oil and instantly refresh your hair between washings.

Don’t Over-color

For those of us who tend to color our hair, it’s important to not overdo it. When we over-process our hair, we are more likely to damage it. When coloring your hair, be sure to wait at least six weeks between sessions. Of course, our hair always looks amazing when its freshly colored, but over doing it can have a counter-effect. Your hair colorist will have your best interests at heart and will be sure to take the gentlest approach with your hair coloring.

Top Tip: Talk to your colorist about styles or techniques that may require less frequent touch ups. And, one of my favorite products is colored spray root touch up. Match your shade and spritz away. It can help extend the time between colorings.

Turn Down the Heat

I will be the first to admit that I know I over style my hair with excessive heat. Between the blow dryer, curling and flat irons, and even hot curlers, it’s hard to avoid the damage. But it’s really important to cool down in the pursuit of healthy-looking hair. If you can’t put down the heating devices all-together, then be sure to turn the temperature down. Use your dryer on low heat only. And lower the temps on your other devices as well. It may take a bit longer to get the job done, but it’s well worth it.

Top Tip: Try using a heat-resistant styling spray to help coat your hair strands and protect them from thermal damage. Many will leave your hair with a healthy-looking shine, too.

Trim It Up

Both men and women need to trim their hair regularly. Just by snipping off the frayed, you can instantly freshen up your hairstyle. There’s nothing worse then those pesky split ends to kill your look. When our hair grows longer, the cuticle (outer layer) tends to weaken and can break. This leaves the middle layers of our hair strand vulnerable and unprotected. When the hair splits at these weak points, they can travel up and up and up. Regular trims will keep them at bay. A quick trim will help maintain the shape of your hair, give it a bit more movement and it will look salon fantastic.

Top Tip: Leave the trimming up to the professionals. It may seem like an easy task to grab a pair of scissors and snip away, but don’t do it. There is an art to it if you are looking for the best results.

Stay Healthy On the Inside

As I always say, healthy skin and hair always start on the inside. A balanced diet with adequate protein and plenty of water, is essential to looking your best. Make sure your diet includes sufficient quantity of vitamins that deliver antioxidant benefits, such a C and E, as well as vitamin D and biotin.

Top Tip: Take a good multi-vitamin every day. The benefits are well worth it.

These habits will have your hair looking amazing in no time. Give them a try. And, remember, the healthiest hair is always the most beautiful.
